Since the fall of Communism in 1989, Laymen Ministries has been working in the country of Romania. Amazing things have happened over the years —
from church planting and national evangelism
to setting up a national prison ministry. We have printed over 500,000 books,
1.3 million Bible lessons,
1.45 million booklets and tracts
as well as purchased thousands of Bibles since 1993.
In 1995, we printed & distributed the internationally acclaimed book and one of the best sellers on the life and death of Jesus Christ — The Desire of Ages, in all the prisons of Romania! This book was handed out
in all 44 prisons throughout Romania to both the inmates and staff
, as well as to public officials
, such as the Members of Parliament and even the then president of Romania. The event was televised internationally on CNN and on Romanian National TV. These books were printed in Romania on former Communist Party presses! The General of the prison system
stated in public, "Under Communism we used to put people in prison for these books! Now we are putting these books in prison!"
Today, we still support the workers of ASUP (Humanitarian Prison Services in Romanian), a prison ministry established by Laymen Ministries back in 1994. Volunteers throughout Romania help inmates to find a new life in Christ. Workers hold Bible studies and worship services,
lead out in social programs,
teach life skills, and do one-on-one counseling. They operate a reintegration center to help released inmates to learn job skills and find employment. ASUP also helps families
of those who are incarcerated. We buy food and help with simple necessities. Some families are in extremely difficult circumstances while one parent is incarcerated, and many receive little help from government aid.
ASUP is a well-organized and effective volunteer agency, and has trained Adventist churches elsewhere in Europe in how to operate a successful prison ministry. It is also at the top of the list for approved non-government agencies to work for the benefit and rehabilitation of inmates in each of Romania’s prisons.
Please pray for ASUP, the prison ministry in Romania, as we try to bring hope and a new life to those who have made some poor decisions. Your support is greatly appreciated. Take time to watch the amazing video above on this page!
