In 16th century Moravia, 12-year-old Micheal Bruhn lives in a castle with his widowed mother and younger sister, Gudryn, in a society where the government runs religious affairs. When the Plague stricks this part of Europe, all of the servants at the castle flee for their lives. Without help for the care of the estate, Micheal's mother illegally welcomes Hutterites to move in with them and build a community, or Bruderhofs. Hutterites are known for their skill with natural medicines, and their refusal to attend the state church. When the famed doctor Paracelsus arrives to heal Gudryn wear ragged clothes, Micheal assumes that he is a Hutterite also, but discovers the doctors true identity. This impresses Micheal to become a doctor as well. But then tragedy strikes, the state finds out about the Bruhn family harboring the Hutterites, and everyone at the castle is arrested and thrown in jail.
